BABYLONIAN CAPTIVITY , the name generally given to the See also:

deportation of the See also:Jews to See also:Babylon by See also:Nebuchadrezzar. Three See also:separate occasions are mentioned (Jer. lii. 28-30). The first was in the See also:time of See also:Jehoiachin in 597 B.C., when the See also:temple of See also:Jerusalem was partially despoiled and a number of the leading citizens removed. After eleven years (in the reign of See also:Zedekiah) a fresh rising of the Judaeans occurred; the See also:city was razed to the ground, and a further deportation ensued. Finally, five years later, See also:Jeremiah (loc. cit.) records a third captivity. After the overthrow of Babylonia by the Persians, See also:Cyrus gave the Jews permission to return to their native See also:land (537 B.C.), and more then See also:forty thousand are said to have availed themselves of the See also:privilege.
