Previously known as Mattaniah (" See also:gift of Yah[weh] "), he was appointed king by See also:Nebuchadrezzar after the See also:capture of See also:Jerusalem (597 B.C.) and his name changed to Zedekiah. He held his position under an See also:oath of See also:allegiance, but after three years (cf. See also:Jehoiakim, 2 Kings xxiv. 1) began an intrigue with See also:Moab, See also:Edom, See also:Ammon, See also:Tyre and See also:Sidon, which the See also:prophet See also:Jeremiah vigorously denounced (Jer. See also:xxvii. seq.; cf. also Ezek. xvii. 11-21). It is possible that he was summoned to See also:Babylon to explain his conduct (Jer. li. 59; the See also:Septuagint reads " from Zedekiah "; see also See also:xxix. 3). Nevertheless, relations were maintained with See also:Egypt and steps were taken to revolt. The Babylonian See also:army began to See also:lay See also:siege to Jerusalem in the ninth See also:year of his reign, and a gain See also:attempt was made by See also:Pharaoh Hophra to cause a diversion. The headings to the prophecies in Ezek. xxix. sqq. suggest that See also:fuller details of the events were once preserved, and the narratives in Jer. xxxii.-xxxiv., See also:xxxvii. give some See also:account of the See also:internal position in Jerusalem at the See also:- TIME (0.
