BITHUR , a See also:town in the See also:Cawnpore See also:district of the See also:United Provinces of See also:India, 12 M. N.W. of Cawnpore See also:city. Pop. (1901) 7173. It is chiefly notable for its connexion with the See also:mutiny of 1857. The last of the peshwas, Baji See also:Rao, was banished to Bithur, and his adopted son, the Nana See also:Sahib, made the town his See also:head-quarters. It was captured by See also:Havelock on the 1 9th of See also:July 1857, when the Nana's palaces were destroyed.
