BOULDER , a See also:

city and the See also:county-seat of Boulder county, See also:Colorado, U.S.A., about 30 M. N.W. of See also:Denver. Pop. (189o) 333o; (1900) 6150 (693 See also:foreign-See also:born); (1910) 9539• It is served by the See also:Union Pacific, the Colorado & See also:Southern, and the Denver, Boulder & Western See also:railways; the last connects with the neighbouring See also:mining camps, and affords See also:fine views of See also:mountain scenery. Boulder lies about 5300 ft. above the See also:sea on See also:Middle Boulder See also:Creek, a See also:branch of the St Vrain See also:river about 30 M. from its confluence with the See also:Platte, and has a beautiful situation in the valley at the See also:foot of the mountains. The See also:state university of Colorado, established at Boulder by an See also:act of 1861, was opened in 1877; it includes a See also:college of liberal arts, school of See also:medicine (1883), school of See also:law (1892), college of See also:engineering (1893), See also:graduate school, college of See also:commerce (1906), college of See also:education (1908), and a summer school (1904), and has a library of about 42,000 volumes. There are a fine See also:park of 2840 acres, the See also:property of the city, and three beautiful canons near Boulder. At the southern limits, in a beautiful situation 400 ft. above the city, are the grounds of an See also:annual summer school, the Colorado See also:Chautauqua. The See also:climate is beneficial for those afflicted with bronchial and pulmonary troubles; the See also:average mean annual temperature for eleven years ending with 1907 was 51° F. There are medicinal springs in the vicinity. The See also:water-See also:works are owned and operated by the city, the water being obtained from lakes at the foot of the Arapahoe See also:Peak See also:glacier in the Snowy Range, 20 M. from the city. The surrounding See also:country is irrigated, and successfully combines See also:agriculture and mining.

There are ore sampling works and See also:

brick-making establishments. Oil and natural See also:gas abound in the vicinity; there are oil refineries in the city; and in Boulder county, especially at Nederland, r8 m. See also:south-See also:west, and at Eldora, about 22 M. south-west of'the city, has been obtained since 'goo most of the See also:tungsten See also:mined in the See also:United States; the output in 1907 was valued at about $520,000. The first See also:settlement near the site of Boulder was made in the autumn of 1858. Placer See also:gold was discovered on an affluent of Boulder Creek in See also:January 1859. The See also:town was laid out and organized in See also:February 1859, and a city See also:charter was secured in 1871 and another in 1882.
