He was originally called Claudius Tiberius Germanicus, and received the name Britannicus from the See also:senate on See also:account of the See also:conquest made in See also:Britain about the See also:time of his See also:birth. Till 48, the date of his See also:mother's See also:execution, he was looked upon as the See also:heir presumptive; but See also:Agrippina, the new wife of Claudius, soon persuaded the feeble emperor to adopt See also:Lucius Domitius, known later as See also:Nero, her son by a previous See also:marriage. After the See also:accession of Nero, Agrippina, by playing on his fears, induced him to See also:poison Britannicus at a banquet (A.D. 55). A See also:golden statue of the See also:young See also:prince was set up by the emperor See also:Titus. Britannicus is the subject of a tragedy by See also:Racine.
