BUSSA , a See also:town in the See also:British See also:protectorate of See also:Northern See also:Nigeria, on the See also:west See also:bank of the See also:Niger, in Io° 9' N., 4° 40' E. It is situated just above the rapids which See also:mark the limit of navigability of the Niger by steamer from the See also:sea. Here in 18o6 Mungo See also:Park, in his second expedition to trace the course of the Niger, was attacked by the inhabitants, and drowned while endeavouring to See also:escape. During 1894–1898 its See also:possession was disputed by See also:Great See also:Britain and See also:France, the last-named See also:country acknowledging by the See also:convention of See also:June 1898 the British claim, which carried with it the See also:control of the See also:lower Niger.
