BYSTROM, JOHAN NIKLAS (1783–1848) , See also:Swedish sculptor, was See also:born on the 18th of See also:December 1783 at Philipstad. At the See also:age of twenty he went to See also:Stockholm and studied for three years under See also:Sergel. In 1809 he gained the See also:academy See also:prize, and in the following See also:year visited See also:Rome. He sent See also:home a beautiful See also:work, " The Reclining Bacchante," in See also:half See also:life See also:size, which raised him at once to the first See also:rank among Swedish sculptors. On his return to Stockholm in 1816 he presented the See also:crown See also:prince with a See also:colossal statue of himself, and was entrusted with several important See also:works. Although he was appointed See also:professor of See also:sculpture at the academy, he soon returned to See also:Italy, and with the exception of the years from 1838 to 1844 continued to reside there. He died at Rome in 1848. Among Bystrom's numerous productions the best are his representations of the See also:female See also:form, such as " See also:Hebe," "See also:Pandora," " See also:Juno suckling See also:Hercules," and the " Girl entering the See also:Bath." His colossal statues of the Swedish See also:kings are also much admired.
