From about 1836 till 1846 he lived in See also:France, where, after a course of study at See also:Paris, he became manager of some chemical See also:works, later acting as assistant to M. E. See also:Chevreul. On his return to See also:England he settled in See also:Manchester as a consulting chemist, and was appointed See also:professor of See also:chemistry at the Royal Institution in that See also:city. Devoting himself almost entirely to See also:industrial chemistry, he gave much See also:attention to the manufacture of See also:coal-See also:tar products, and particularly carbolic See also:acid, for the See also:production of which he established large works in Manchester in 1865. Besides contributing extensively to the English and See also:French scientific See also:journals, he published a See also:work on See also:Dyeing and See also:Calico-See also:Printing.
