CERNUSCHI, See also:HENRI (1821-1896) , See also:Italian politician and economist, was See also:born of wealthy parents at See also:Milan in 1821, and was destined for the legal profession. During his studies he became involved in the revolutionary See also:movement. He played a conspicuous See also:part in the insurrection at Milan in 1848, and also at See also:Rome in 1849, where he had a seat in the See also:National See also:Assembly. On the collapse of the revolutionary See also:government he was arrested (185o), but managed to See also:escape to See also:France, where he engaged in See also:commerce and banking, became naturalized, and acquired a large See also:fortune. He took a prominent part in opposing the Socialist movement, and in See also:April 187o, having subscribed a large sum to the funds of a See also:committee formed to combat the See also:Napoleonic See also:plebiscite, had to leave the See also:country. In See also:September the formation of the Third See also:Republic enabled him to return, but he soon See also:left See also:Paris to travel in the See also:East, whence be returned with a See also:fine See also:art collection, particularly of See also:Japanese See also:objects. Cernuschi is best known for his publications on See also:financial questions, more especially See also:bimetallism. Of the latter he was an ardent See also:champion, and the word itself is commonly supposed to have originated with him—at least in its See also:English See also:form it is first found in his See also:Silver Vindicated (1876). Among his other See also:works may be mentioned: 2vlecanique de l'echange (1861); Illusion See also:des societes cooperatives (1886); Le B.imetallisme en Angleterre (1879); Le See also:Grand Proses de l'See also:Union latine (1884). He died at See also:Mentone on the 12th of May 1896.
