CITTADELLA , a See also:town of See also:Venetia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Padua, 20 M. N.W. by See also:rail from the town of Padua; r6o ft. above See also:sea-level. Pop. (1901) town, 3616; See also:commune, 9686. The town was founded in 1220 by the Paduans to counterbalance the fortification of See also:Castelfranco, 8 m. to the E., in 1218 by the Trevisans, and retains its well-preserved See also:medieval walls, surrounded by a wet ditch. It was always a fortress of importance, and in See also:modern times is a centre for the agricultural produce of the See also:district, being the junction of the lines from Padua to See also:Bassano and from See also:Vicenza to Treviso.
