BASSANO , a See also:

city of See also:Venetia, See also:Italy, in the See also:province of See also:Vicenza, 24 M. N.E. of Vicenza and 30 M. N. of See also:Padua by See also:rail, at the See also:foot of the Venetian See also:Alps. Pop. (1901) See also:town, 7553 ; See also:commune, 15,097. It is well situated upon the Brenta, which is here spanned by a covered wooden See also:bridge, and commands See also:fine views. The See also:castle, erected by the Ezzelini in the 13th See also:century, lies in the upper portion of the town, above the See also:river; a See also:tower, erected by a member of the same See also:family, is a conspicuous feature. The museum and See also:cathedral and some of the other churches contain pictures by the da See also:Ponte family (16th and See also:early 17th century), surnamed Bassano from their See also:birth-See also:place; Jacopo is the most eminent of them. The museum also contains drawings and letters of the sculptor See also:Antonio See also:Canova. The See also:church of S. See also:Francesco, begun in the 12th century in the Lombard Romanesque See also:style, was continued in the 13th in the See also:Gothic style. Some of the houses have traces of paintings on their facades.
