CIUDAD RODRIGO , a See also:town of western See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Salamanca, situated 8 m. E. of the Portuguese frontier, on the right See also:bank of the See also:river Agueda, and the railway from Salamanca to See also:Coimbra in See also:Portugal. Pop. (1900) 893o. Ciudad Rodrigo is an episcopal see, and was for many centuries an important frontier fortress: Its See also:cathedral See also:dates from 1190, but was restored in the 15th See also:century. The remnants of a See also:Roman See also:aqueduct, the See also:foundations of a See also:bridge across the Agueda, and other remains, seem to show that Ciudad Rodrigo occupies the site of a Roman See also:settlement. It was founded in the 12th century by See also:Count Rodrigo Gonzalez, from whom its name is derived. During the See also:Peninsular See also:War, it was captured by the See also:French under See also:Marshal See also:Ney, in 181o; but on the 19th of See also:January 1812 it was retaken by the See also:British under See also:Viscount See also:Wellington, who, for this exploit, was created See also:earl of Wellington, See also:duke of Ciudad Rodrigo, and See also:marquess of Torres Vedras. in Portugal.
