CLAIRVAUX , a See also:

village of See also:north-eastern See also:France, in the See also:department of See also:Aube, 40 M. E.S.E. of See also:Troyes on the Eastern railway to See also:Belfort. Clairvaux (See also:Clara Vallis) is situated in the valley of the Aube on the eastern border of the See also:Forest of Clairvaux. Its, celebrity is due to the See also:abbey founded in 1115 by St See also:Bernard, which became the centre of the Cistercian See also:order. The buildings (see ABBEY) belong for the most See also:part to the 18th See also:century, but there is a large storehouse which See also:dates from the 12th century. The abbey, suppressed at the Revolution, now serves as a See also:prison, containing on an See also:average 800 inmates, who are employed in agricultural and See also:industrial occupations. Clairvaux has See also:iron-See also:works of some importance.
