These animals live in the forests of the See also:Malay See also:Peninsula, See also:Sumatra, See also:Borneo and the Philippine Islands, where they feed chiefly on leaves, and probably also on See also:insects. In See also:size they may be compared with See also:cats; the See also:long slender limbs are connected by a broad See also:fold of skin extending outwards from the sides of the See also:neck and See also:body, the fingers and toes are webbed, and the See also:hind-limbs joined by an See also:outer membrane as in bats. Their habits are nocturnal, and during the daytime they cling to the trunks or limbs of trees See also:head downwards in a See also:state of repose. With the approach of See also:night their See also:season of activity commences, when they may be occasionally seen gliding from See also:tree to tree supported on their cutaneous See also:parachute, and they have been noticed as capable of traversing in this way a space of 70 yds. with a descent of only about one in five.
