DARAB (originally DARABGERD) , a See also:district of the See also:province of See also:Fars in See also:Persia. It has sixty-two villages, and possesses a hot See also:climate, See also:snow being rarely seen there in See also:winter. It produces a See also:great quantity of See also:dates and much See also:tobacco, which is considered the best in Persia. The See also:town Darab, the See also:capital of the district, is situated in a very fertile See also:plain, 140 M. S.E. of See also:Shiraz. It has a See also:population of about 5000, and extensive orchards of See also:orange and See also:lemon trees and immense plantations of date-palms. See also:Legend ascribes the See also:foundation of the See also:city to See also:Darius, hence its name Darab-gerd (Darius-town). In the neighbourhood there arevarious remains of antiquity, the most important of which m. S., is known as the Kalah i Dal-a, or citadel of Darius, and consists of a See also:series of earthworks arranged in a circle See also:round an isolated See also:rock. Nothing, however, remains to See also:fix the date or explain the See also:history of the fortification. Another See also:monument in the vicinity is a gigantic bas-See also:relief, carved on the See also:vertical See also:face of a rock, representing the victory of the See also:Sassanian See also:Shapur I. (Sapor) of Persia over the See also:Roman See also:emperor See also:Valerian, A.D.
