DARLINGTONIA (called after See also:William See also:Darlington, an See also:American botanist) , a Californian See also:pitcher-plant, belonging to the See also:order Sarraceniaceae. There is only one See also:species, D. californica, which is found at 5000 ft. See also:altitude on the Sierra Nevadas of See also:California, growing in sphagnum-bogs along with sundews and rushes. The pitcher-like leaves See also:form a cluster, and are 1 to 2 ft. high, slender, erect, and end in a rounded hooded See also:top, from which hangs a blade shaped like a See also:fish-tail which See also:guards the entrance to the pitcher. See also:Insects are attracted to the leaves by the See also:bright colouring, especially of the upper See also:part; entering they pass down the narrow See also:funnel guided by downward pointing hairs which also prevent their ascent. They form a putrefying See also:mass in the bottom of the pitcher, and the products of their decomposition are presumably absorbed by the See also:leaf for See also:food.
