DURBAR , a See also:

term in See also:India for a See also:court or See also:levee, from the See also:Persian darbar. A durbar may be either a See also:council for administering affairs of See also:state, or a purely ceremonial gathering. In the former sense the native rulers of India in the past, like the See also:amir of See also:Afghanistan to-See also:day, received visitors and conducted business in durbar. A durbar is the executive council of a native state. In the latter sense the word has come to be applied to See also:great ceremonial gatherings like See also:Lord See also:Lytton's durbar for the See also:proclamation of the See also:queen empress in India in 1872, or the See also:Delhi durbar of 1903.
