EKATERINODAR , a See also:

town of See also:South See also:Russia, See also:chief town of the See also:province of See also:Kuban, on the right See also:bank of the See also:river Kuban, 85 m. E.N.E. of Novo-rossiysk on the railway to Rostov-on-See also:Don, and in 450 3' N. and 38° 50' E. It is badly built, on a swampy site exposed to the inundations of the river; and its houses, with few exceptions, are slight structures of See also:wood and See also:plaster. Founded by See also:Catherine II. in 1794 on the site of an old town called Tmutarakan, as a small fort and Cossack See also:settlement, its See also:population See also:grew from 9620 in ,86o to 65,697 in 1897. It has various technical See also:schools, an experimental See also:fruit-See also:farm, a military See also:hospital, and a natural See also:history museum. A considerable See also:trade is carried on, especially in cereals.
