EUONYMUS , in See also:

botany, a genus of See also:deciduous or See also:evergreen shrubs or small trees, widely distributed in the See also:north temperate See also:zone, and represented in See also:Britain by E. europaeus, the spindle See also:tree, so called from its hard tough See also:wood being formerly used for spindles. It is a See also:shrub or small tree growing in copses or hedges, with a See also:grey smooth bark, four-angled See also:green twigs, opposite leaves and loose clusters of small greenish-See also:white See also:flowers. The ripe See also:fruit is a See also:pale See also:crimson See also:colour and splits into four lobes ex-posing the See also:bright See also:orange-coloured See also:seed. E. japonicus is a See also:hardy evergreen shrub, often variegated and well known in gardens. The See also:Greek name b:avv os, of See also:good name, lucky, is probably a See also:euphemism; the flowering was said to foretell See also:plague.
