(1899) of the district, 16,782; and of the town, 3414. The district is highlyfertile and is well watered, owing in See also:great measure to its abundant rainfall. See also:Sugar See also:production is its See also:principal See also:industry, but some See also:attention is also given to the growing of See also:orange's and pineapples. The town, which was founded in 1774, is a busy commercial centre See also:standing 14 m. from a large and well-sheltered See also:bay, at the entrance to which is the cape called Cabeza de See also:San Juan. It is the See also:market town for a number of small islands off the E. coast, some of which produce See also:cattle for export.
