FLAVIAN II . (d. 518), See also:bishop or See also:patriarch of See also:Antioch, was chosen by the See also:emperor See also:Anastasius I. to succeed See also:Palladius, most probably in 498. He endeavoured to please both parties by steering a See also:middle course in reference to the See also:Chalcedon (q.v.) decrees, but was induced after See also:great hesitation to agree to the See also:request of Anastasius that he should accept the Henoticon, or See also:decree of See also:union, issued by the emperor See also:Zeno. His doing so, while it brought upon him the See also:anathema of the patriarch of See also:Constantinople, failed to secure the favour of Anastasius, who in 511 found in the riots which were occurring between the See also:rival parties in the streets of Antioch a pretext for deposing Flavian, and banishing him to See also:Petra, where he died in 518. Flavian was soon after his See also:death enrolled among the See also:saints of the See also:Greek See also:Church, and after some opposition he was also canonized by the Latin Church.
