GARRUCHA , a seaport of See also:

south-eastern See also:Spain, in the See also:province of See also:Almeria; on the Mediterranean See also:Sea and on the right See also:bank of the See also:river Antas. Pop. (1900) 4461. The See also:harbour of Garrucha,which is defended by an See also:ancient See also:castle, affords shelter to large See also:ships, and is the natural outlet for the See also:commerce of a thriving agricultural and See also:mining See also:district. Despite its small See also:size and the want of railway communication, Garrucha has thus a consider-able See also:trade in See also:lead, See also:silver, See also:copper, See also:iron, See also:esparto grass, See also:fruit, &c. Besides sea-going ships, many small coasters enter in See also:ballast, and clear with valuable cargoes. In 1902, 135 vessels of 390,000 tons entered the harbour, the See also:majority being See also:British or See also:Spanish; and in the same See also:year the value of the exports reached £478,000, and that of the imports L128,000. Both imports and exports trebled their value in the ten years 1892–1902.
