GATCHINA , a See also:town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of St See also:Peters-See also:burg, 29 M. by See also:rail S. of the See also:city of St See also:Petersburg, in 59 034' N. and 30 6' E. Pop. (186o) 9184; (1897) 14,735. It is situated in a See also:flat, well-wooded, and partly marshy See also:district, and on the See also:south See also:side of the town are two lakes. Among its more important buildings are the imperial See also:palace, which was founded in 1770 by See also:Prince See also:Orlov, and constructed according to the plans of the See also:Italian architect Rinaldi; a military orphanage, founded in 1803; and a school for See also:horticulture. Among the few See also:industrial establishments is a See also:porcelain factory. At Gatchina an See also:alliance was concluded between Russia and See also:Sweden on the 29th of See also:October 1799.
