It was built in 1693, after the destruction by an See also:earthquake of the old town of Occhiala to the See also:north; the latter, on See also:account of the similarity of name, is generally identified with Echetla, a frontier See also:city between Syracusan and Carthaginian territory in the See also:time of See also:Hiero II., which appears to have been originally a Sicel city in which See also:Greek See also:civilization prevailed from the 5th See also:century onwards. To the See also:east of Grammichele a See also:cave See also:shrine of See also:Demeter, with See also:fine votive terra-cottas, has been discovered. See Mon. Lincei, vii.
