GROUP XVI . Phenol.—This includes a very large number of bodies chemically allied to benzol, such as carbolic See also:acid, sulphocarbolates, See also:creosote, See also:wood See also:tar, See also:coal tar, oil of See also:cade, See also:thymol, salicylic acid, benzoic acid, naphthol, hydroquinon, cresol, guaiacol, ichthyol, See also:saccharin and many others. These all resemble carbolic acid more or less closely, and may be described as See also:general See also:protoplasm poisons. Locally their destructive and irritating effects vary a See also:good See also:deal, but even when very dilute they all have a marked poisonous See also:action on bacteria, See also:white See also:blood corpuscles, yeast and similar organisms. After absorption most of them exercise a depressing effect upon the See also:nervous See also:system, and are capable of reducing high temperature. They are mostly excreted in the urine.
