GUANAJAY , a See also:town of western See also:Cuba, in Pinar del Rio See also:province, about 36 m. (by See also:rail) S.W. of See also:Havana. Pop. (1907) 6400. Guanajay is served by the W. See also:branch of the See also:United See also:railways of Havana, of which it is the W. See also:terminus. The town lies among hills, has an excellent See also:climate, and in colonial times was (like See also:Holguin) an See also:acclimatization station for troops fresh from See also:Spain; it now has considerable repute as a See also:health resort. The surrounding See also:country is a fertile See also:sugar and See also:tobacco region. Guanajay has always been important as a distributing point in the See also:commerce of the western end of the See also:island. It was an See also:ancient See also:pueblo, of considerable See also:size and importance as See also:early as the end of the 18th See also:century.
