HEIDELBERG , a See also:

town and See also:district of the See also:Transvaal. The district is bounded S. by the See also:Vaal See also:river and includes the See also:south-eastern See also:part of the Witwatersrand See also:gold-See also:fields. The town of Heidelberg is 42 M. S.E. of See also:Johannesburg and 441 M. N.W. of See also:Durban by See also:rail. Pop. (1904), 3220, of whom 1837 were See also:white. It was founded in 1865, is built on the slopes of the See also:Rand at an See also:elevation of 5029 ft., and is reputed the best See also:sanatorium in the See also:colony. It is the centre of the eastern Rand gold-mines.
