JAMMU , or JuMMoo, the See also:

The See also:town and See also:palace stand upon the right See also:bank of the river; the fort overhangs the See also:left bank at an See also:elevation of 150 ft. above the stream. The lofty whitened walls of the palace and citadel See also:present a striking See also:appearance from the surrounding See also:country. Extensive See also:pleasure grounds and ruins of See also:great See also:size attest the former prosperity of the See also:city when it was the seat of a See also:Rajput See also:dynasty whose dominions extended into the plains and included the See also:modern See also:district of See also:Sialkot. It was afterwards conquered by the Sikhs, and formed See also:part of Ranjit Singh's dominions. After his See also:death it was acquired by Gulab Singh as the See also:nucleus of his dominions to which the See also:British added Kashmir in 1846. It is connected with Sialkot in the See also:Punjab by a railway 16 m. See also:long. In 1898 the town was devastated by a See also:fire, which destroyed most of the public offices. The state of Jammu proper, as opposed to Kashmir, consists of a submontane See also:tract, forming the upper See also:basin of the Chenab. Pop.
