JANJIRA , a native See also:

state of See also:India, in the See also:Konkan See also:division of Bombay, situated along the See also:coast among the spurs of the Western See also:Ghats, 40 M. S. of Bombay See also:city. See also:Area, 324 sq. m. Pop. (1901), 85,414, showing an increase of 4% in the See also:decade. The estimated See also:revenue is about £37,000; there is no See also:tribute. The See also:chief, whose See also:title is See also:Nawab See also:Sahib, is by descent a Sidi or Abyssinian See also:Mahommedan; and his ancestors were for many generations admirals of the Mahommedan rulers of the See also:Deccan. The state, popularly known as Habsan (=Abyssinian), did not come under See also:direct subordination to the See also:British until 187o. It supplies sailors and fishermen, and also firewood, to Bombay, with which it is in See also:regular communication by steamer. The Nawab of Janjira is also chief of the state of See also:JAFARABAD (q.v.).
