JANIUAY , a See also:

town of the See also:province of Iloilo, Panay, Philippine Islands, on the Suague See also:river, about 20 M. W.N.W. of Iloilo, the See also:capital. Pop. (1903), 27,399, including Lambfinao (6661) annexed to Janivay in 1903. The town commands delightful views of See also:mountain and valley scenery. An excellent road connects it with See also:Pototan, about 10 m. E. The surrounding See also:country is hilly but fertile and well cultivated, producing See also:rice, See also:sugar, See also:tobacco, vegetables (for the Iloilo See also:market), See also:hemp and See also:Indian See also:corn. The See also:women weave and sell beautiful fabrics of See also:pina, See also:silk, See also:cotton and See also:abaca. The See also:language is Panay-Visayan. Janivay was founded in 1578; it was first established in the mountains and was subsequently removed to its See also:present site.
