KILT , properly the See also:short loose skirt or See also:petticoat, reaching to the knees and usually made of See also:tartan, forming See also:part of the See also:dress of a Scottish Highlander (see See also:COSTUME). The word means that which is " girded or tucked up," and is apparently of Scandinavian origin, cf. Danish kilte, to tuck up. The See also:early kilt was not a See also:separate garment but was merely the See also:lower part of the See also:plaid, in which the Highlander wrapped himself, See also:hanging down in folds below the See also:belt.
