KLAFSKY, KATHARINA -(1855-1896), Hungarian operatic See also:singer, was See also:born at Szt Janos, Wieselburg, of humble parents. Being employed at See also:Vienna as a nurserymaid, her See also:fine See also:soprano See also:voice led to her being engaged as a See also:chorus singer, and she was given See also:good lessons in See also:music. By 1882 she became well-known in Wagnerian roles at the See also:Leipzig See also:theatre, and she increased her reputation at other See also:German musical centres. In 1892 she appeared in See also:London, and had a See also:great success in See also:Wagner's operas, notably as Briinnhilde and as Isolde, her dramatic as well as vocal gifts being of an exceptional See also:order. She sang in See also:America in 1895, but died of See also:brain disease in 1896. A See also:Life, by L. Ordemann, was published in 1903 (Leipzig).
