It is picturesquely situated on the See also:river Glan, which is in communication with the Worther-see by the 3 M. See also:long Lend See also:canal. Among the more noteworthy buildings are the See also:parish See also:church of St FEgidius (1709), with a See also:tower 298 ft. in height; the See also:cathedral of SS See also:Peter and See also:Paul (1582-1593, burnt 1723, restored 1725); the churches of the See also:Benedictines (1613), of the See also:Capuchins (1646), and of the See also:order of St See also:Elizabeth (1710). To these must be added the See also:palace of the See also:prince-See also:bishop of Gurk, the See also:burg or See also:castle, existing in its See also:present See also:form since 1777; and the Landhaus or See also:house of See also:assembly, dating from the end of the 14th See also:century, and containing a museum of natural See also:history, and collection of minerals, antiquities, See also:seals, paintings and sculptures. The most interesting public See also:monument is the See also:great Lindwurm or See also:Dragon, See also:standing in the See also:principal square (1590). The See also:industrial establishments comprise See also:white See also:lead factories, See also:machine and See also:iron foundries, and See also:commerce is active, especially in the See also:mineral products of the region. Upon the Zollfeld to the See also:north of the See also:city once stood the See also:ancient See also:Roman See also:town of Virunum. During the See also:Middle Ages Klagenfurt became the See also:property of the See also:crown, but by a patent of See also:Maximilian I. of the 24th of See also:April 151$, it was conceded to the Carinthian estates, and has since then taken the See also:place of St See also:Veit as capital of Carinthia. In 1535, 1636, 1723 and 1796 Klagenfurt suffered from destructive fires, and in 1690 from the effects of an See also:earthquake.

On the 29th of See also:

March 1797 the See also:French took the city, and upon the following See also:day it was occupied by See also:Napoleon as his headquarters.
