KURUNEGALA , the See also:

chief See also:town in the See also:north-western See also:province of See also:Ceylon. Pop. of the town, 6483; of the See also:district, 249,429. It was the See also:residence of the See also:kings of Ceylon from A.D. 1319 to 1347, and is romantically situated under the shade of Adagalla (the See also:rock of the Tusked See also:Elephant), which is 600 ft. high. It was in 1902 the See also:terminus of the See also:Northern railway (59 M. from See also:Colombo, which has since been extended 200 M. farther, to the northern-most See also:coast of the See also:Jaffna See also:Peninsula. Kurunegala is the centre of See also:rice, coco-See also:nut, See also:tea, See also:coffee and See also:cocoa cultivation.
