LANCIANO (anc. S.E. of Chieti. Pop. (1901) 7642 (town), 18,316 (See also:commune). It has a railway station on the coast railway, 19 M. S.E. of Castellammare Adriatico. It has broad, See also:regular streets, and several See also:fine buildings. The See also:cathedral, an imposing structure with a fine See also:clock-See also:tower of 1619, is built upon See also:bridges of See also:brickwork, dating perhaps from the See also:Roman See also:period (though the inscription attributing the See also:work to See also:Diocletian is a See also:forgery), that span the See also:gorge of the Feltrino, and is dedicated to S. Maria del See also:Ponte, Our See also:Lady of the See also:Bridge. The See also:Gothic See also:church of S. Maria See also:Maggiore See also:dates from 1227 and has a fine See also:facade, with a portal of 1317 by a See also:local sculptor.

cross by the silversmith Nicola di Guardiagrele (1422) is very beautiful. In S. Nicola is a fine reliquary of 1445 by Nicola di Francavilla. The church of the Annunziata has a See also:good See also:rose window of 1362. The See also:industries of the town, famous in the See also:middle ages, have declined. Anxanum belonged originally to the tribe of the See also:Frentani and later became a See also:municipium.
