LOMZA , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, See also:capital of the See also:government of the same name, on the Narew, 103 M. by See also:rail N.E. from See also:Warsaw. Pop. (1872), 13,86o, (190o) 22,428. Lomza is an old town, one of its churches having been erected before r000. In the 16th See also:century it carried on a brisk See also:trade with Lithuania and See also:Prussia. It was well fortified and had two citadels, but nevertheless often suffered from the invasions of the Germans and See also:Tatars, and in the 17th century it was twice plundered by the See also:Cossacks of the See also:Ukraine. In 1795 it See also:fell under the dominion of Prussia, and after the See also:peace of See also:Tilsit (1807) it came under See also:Russian See also:rule.
