PRUSSIA , in the See also:

original and narrower sense of the word, a territory of See also:Germany, in the See also:kingdom of Prussia, stretching along the Baltic See also:coast for about 220 m., and occupying an See also:area of 24,083 sq. m. The eastern See also:part of this territory formed the duchy of Prussia, which was conquered and colonized by the See also:Teutonic See also:Order and was acquired by the elector of See also:Brandenburg in 1618, furnishing his successor with his See also:regal See also:title in 1701. The western part, which had been severed from the eastern See also:half and assigned to See also:Poland in 1466, was not annexed to Prussia until the See also:partition of Poland in 1772, while the towns of See also:Danzig and See also:Thorn remained See also:Polish down to 1793. The two districts were See also:united in 1824 to See also:form a single See also:province. But, as might have been expected, the See also:union did not See also:work well, and it was dissolved in 1878, its See also:place being taken by the See also:modern provinces of See also:East and See also:West Prussia.
