It See also:rose into importance as a fishing See also:harbour towards the end of the 16th See also:century, and its prosperity rapidly increased after the opening of the New Waterway (the See also:Maas See also:ship See also:canal) from Rotterdam to the See also:sea. The fort ,erected here in 1572 by See also:Philip of Marnix, See also:lord of St Aldegonde, was captured by the See also:Spanish in 1573.
