MARIPOSAN, or YOKUTS , a linguistic stock of See also:North See also:American See also:Indians, including some 40 small tribes. Its former territory was in See also:southern See also:California, around Tulare See also:lake. The Mariposans were fishers and hunters. Their villages consisted of a single See also:row of See also:wedge-shaped huts, with an awning of See also:brush along the front. In 1850 they numbered some 3000; in 1905 there were 154 on the Tule See also:river See also:reservation.
