MARITIME TERRITORY , a See also:

term used in See also:international See also:law to denote coastal See also:waters which are not Territorial Waters though in immediate contact with the See also:sea. In the See also:case of Territorial Waters (q.v.) the dominion of the adjacent See also:state is subject to a See also:limitation. Dominion over maritime territory is not subject to any limitation. Thus any strait through which the right of passage of See also:foreign vessels can be forbidden (as the See also:Solent or the Inland Sea of See also:Japan), or bays so See also:land-locked that they cannot be held to See also:form See also:part of any ocean-See also:highway, are maritime territory.
