MASCARENE ISLANDS (occasionally MASCARENHAS) , the collective See also:

title of a See also:group in the See also:Indian Ocean See also:east of See also:Madagascar, viz. See also:Mauritius, See also:Reunion and See also:Rodriguez (q.v.). The collective title is derived from the Portuguese navigator Mascarenhas, by whom Reunion, at first called Mascarenhas, was discovered.
