Mascara (i.e. " See also:mother of soldiers ") was the See also:capital of a See also:Turkish beylik during the See also:Spanish occupation of Oran from the 16th to the See also:close of the 18th See also:century; but for the most of that period it occupied a site about two miles distant from the See also:present position. On the removal of the See also:bey to Oran its importance rapidly declined ; and it was an insignificant place when in 1832 Abd-el-Kader, who was See also:born in the neighbourhood, See also:chose it as the seat of his See also:power.
