It lies 1800 ft. above the See also:sea, on the See also:southern slope of a range forming See also:part of the Little See also:Atlas Mountains, and occupies two small hills separated by the See also:Wad Tudman, which is crossed by three See also:stone See also:bridges. The walls, upwards of two See also:miles in See also:circuit, and strengthened by bastions and towers, give the See also:place a somewhat imposing See also:appearance. Mascara is a town of the See also:French colonial type, few vestiges of the Moorish See also:period remaining. Among the public buildings are two mosques, in one of which Abd-el-Kader preached the See also:jihad. The town also contains the usual establishments attaching to the seat of a sub-See also:prefect and the centre of a military subdivision. The See also:principal See also:industry is the making of See also:wine, the See also:white wines of Mascara being held in high repute. There is also a considerable See also:trade in grains and oil. A See also:branch railway eight miles See also:long, connects Mascara with the See also:line from the seaport of Arzeu to See also:Ain Sefra. See also:Access is also gained by this line to Oran, See also:Algiers, &c. Pop.

commune, which includes several villages, 22,934; of the arrondissement, comprising eleven communes, 190,154. Mascara (i.e. " See also:mother of soldiers ") was the See also:capital of a See also:Turkish beylik during the See also:Spanish occupation of Oran from the 16th to the See also:close of the 18th See also:century; but for the most of that period it occupied a site about two miles distant from the See also:present position. On the removal of the See also:bey to Oran its importance rapidly declined ; and it was an insignificant place when in 1832 Abd-el-Kader, who was See also:born in the neighbourhood, See also:chose it as the seat of his See also:power. It was laid in ruins by the French under See also:Marshal See also:Clausel and the See also:duke of See also:Orleans in 1835, the See also:amir retreating See also:south. Being reoccupied by Abd-el-Kader in 1838, Mascara was again captured in 1841 by Marshal Bugeaud and See also:General See also:Lamoriciere.
