See also:Born at See also:Marseilles in 1634, he See also:early entered the French See also:Oratory, and obtained See also:great reputation as a preacher. See also:Paris confirmed the See also:judgment of the provinces; in 1666 he was asked to preach before the See also:court, and became a great favourite with See also:Louis XIV., who said that his eloquence was one of the few things that never See also:grew old. In 1671 he was appointed See also:bishop of See also:Tulle; eight years later he was transferred to the larger See also:diocese of See also:Agen. He still continued, however, to preach regularly at court, being especially in See also:request for funeral orations. A See also:panegyric on See also:Turenne, delivered in 1675, is considered his masterpiece. His See also:style is strongly tinged with preciosite; and his See also:chief surviving See also:interest is as a glaring example of the evils from which See also:Bossuet delivered the French See also:pulpit. During his later years he devoted himself entirely to his See also:pastoral duties at Agen, where he died in 1703. Six of his most famous sermons were edited, with a See also:biographical See also:sketch of their author, by the Oratorian See also:Horde in 1704.
