MODOC (i.e. " southerners ") , a tribe of See also:North See also:American See also:Indians of the I,utuamian stock, who formerly lived around See also:Lower See also:Klamath See also:Lake, See also:south-western See also:Oregon. They were always an aggressive See also:people, and constantly at See also:war with their neighbours. They are known mainly from their stubborn resistance to the See also:United States See also:government in 1872 and 1873. This is called the Modoc War, and was caused by an See also:attempt to See also:place them on a See also:reservation. After some preliminary fighting the Modocs retreated to the " See also:Lava Beds," a basaltic region, seamed and crevassed, and See also:rich in caves. Here they made a stand for several months. During the war two members of a See also:peace See also:commission were treacherously massacred by them while under a See also:flag of truce. On their final submission the leaders were hanged and See also:part of the tribe was removed to See also:Indian Territory (now See also:Oklahoma), and the others were sent back to a reservation on the Klamath.
