GAS , the name given to the inflammable gas occur-See also:ring in petroliferous formations. It consists mainly of hydro-carbons of the See also:paraffin See also:series, principally See also:marsh gas, which constitutes from 5o to 90 % of the Pennsylvanian gas. Members of the See also:olefine series are also See also:present, especially in the gas of See also:Baku. Varying amounts of See also:carbon dioxide, sometimes as much as ro% or more, and small quantities of carbon monoxide, See also:nitrogen, See also:hydrogen and See also:oxygen are also found.
