He became a See also:fellow of See also:Exeter See also:College, Oxford, in 1658. In 1662 he was ordained, and presented to the living of See also:Swindon, which he resigned in the following See also:year. After acting as See also:chaplain to See also:Seth See also:Ward, See also:bishop of Exeter and See also:Salisbury, and See also:Lord See also:Chancellor See also:Clarendon, he was elected See also:principal of St See also:Alban See also:Hall, Oxford, in 1673. In 1679 he was appointed See also:provost of Trinity College, Dublin, where he did much to encourage the study of the Irish See also:language. He helped to found the Royal Dublin Society, and contributed to it a See also:paper entitled " See also:Introductory See also:Essay to the See also:Doctrine of Sounds " (printed in Philosophical Transactions, No. 156, Oxford, 1684). In 1683 he was consecrated bishop of Ferns and Leighlin, but after the See also:accession of See also:James II. he was compelled by the turbulent soldiery to flee to See also:England (1689), where he became See also:vicar of Gresford, See also:Flint, and See also:canon of St See also:Asaph. Returning to See also:Ireland in 1691 after the See also:battle of the See also:Boyne, he was made archbishop of See also:Cashel, and three years later he became archbishop of Dublin. About this See also:time he founded the Marsh Library in Dublin. He became archbishop of Armagh in 1703. Between 1699 and 1711 he was six times a lord See also:justice of Ireland.
