While studying See also:theology at the university he devoted See also:special See also:attention to Biblical See also:archaeology. In 1955 he was chosen See also:professor at the gymnasium of his native See also:town, in 1763 librarian to the university, in 1770 professor of See also:rhetoric, and in 1782 of See also:logic and See also:metaphysics. Oberlin published several manuals on archaeology and See also:ancient See also:geography, and made frequent excursions into different provinces of See also:France to invest See also:gate antiquarian remains and study provincial dialects, the result appearing in Essai sur le See also:patois Lorrain (1775) ; See also:Dissertations sur See also:les See also:Minnesingers (1782–1789); and Observations concernant le patois et les mceurs See also:des gens de la campagne (1791). He also published several See also:editions of Latin authors. He died on the loth of See also:October 18o6.
