OSTASHKOV , a See also:

town of See also:Russia, in the See also:government of See also:Tver, on See also:Lake Seliger, Io8 m. W.N.W. of the See also:city of Tver; pop. 10,457. The See also:climate is See also:damp and unhealthy. The town has tanneries, and is a centre for the making of boots and shoes, for agricultural implements, fishing-nets and the See also:building of boats. The advantageous site, the proximity of the Smolenskiy Zhitnyi monastery, a See also:pilgrim resort on an See also:island of the lake and the See also:early development of certain See also:petty trades combined to bring prosperity to Ostashkov. Its See also:cathedral (1672–1685) contains valuable offerings, as also do two other churches of the same See also:century.
