OSTEND (Flemish and See also:French Ostende) , a See also:town of See also:Belgium in the See also:province of See also:West See also:Flanders. Pop. (1904) 41,181. It is the most fashionable seaside resort and the second See also:port of the See also:kingdom. Situated on the See also:North See also:Sea it forms almost the central point on the 42 M. of sea-See also:coast that belong to Belgium. In the See also:middle ages it was strongly fortified and underwent several sieges; the most notable was that of 1601–1604, when it only surrendered by See also:order of the states to See also:Spinola. In 1865 the last vestiges of its ramparts were removed, and since that date, but more especially since 1898, a new town has been created. The digue or See also:parade, constructed of solid See also:granite, extends for over 2 M. along the See also:shore in a southerly direction from the See also:long See also:jetty which protects the entrance to the port. A See also:fine See also:casino and the royal chalet are prominent See also:objects along the sea front, and the sea-bathing is unsurpassed. In the See also:rear of the town is a fine See also:park to which a See also:race-course has been added. Extensive See also:works were begun in 1900 for the purpose of carrying the See also:harbour back 2 m., and a See also:series of large docks were excavated and extensive quays constructed. The docks accommodate See also:ships of large See also:tonnage.

Apart from these docks Ostend has a very considerable passenger and See also:

provision See also:traffic with See also:England, and is the See also:head-quarters of the Belgian fishing See also:fleet, estimated to employ 400 boats and 1600 men and boys. Ostend is in See also:direct railway communication with See also:Brussels, See also:Cologne and See also:Berlin. It is also the starting point of several See also:light See also:railways along the coast and to the See also:southern towns of Flanders.
