PAPEETE , the See also:

capital of the Pacific See also:island of See also:Tahiti, and the See also:chief See also:port and trading centre, and the seat of See also:government of the See also:French establishments in See also:Oceania. Pop. 4280 (2500 French). The See also:town, lying on the See also:north-See also:west See also:coast of the island, on a beautiful See also:harbour entered by two passages through the protecting See also:reef, and backed by five mountains, is French in See also:character as far as concerns the richer quarters. It has a See also:cathedral, See also:barracks and See also:arsenal, government buildings and a botanical See also:garden. The See also:Chinese See also:quarter and the picturesque native See also:market contrast strongly with the See also:European See also:settlement. Of the entrances to the harbour, which is of See also:fair extent and See also:depth, that of Papeete has about seven fathoms depth; that of Taunoa is shallower, though wider and more convenient.
